Lightning over Colorado

This image captures a lightning storm over Colorado. Lightning is produced when updrafts carry light ice crystals into collisions with larger, softer ice balls, causing the smaller crystals to become positively charged. Once enough charge separates, the rapid electrical discharge of lightning occurs. Lightning heats a thin column of air to about three times the temperature of the Sun's surface.
