Three Tails of Comet NEOWISE
NASA APOD · Nicolas Lefaudeux
COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet NEOWISE was a spectacular sight in the summer of 2020. It displayed a striated white dust tail and a patchy blue ion tail. Some images also showed an unusual third red tail. Analysis revealed that much of this red color was emitted by sodium. Sodium-rich gas might have been released from the comet's warming nucleus by bright sunlight.
