A Beautiful Trifid

The Trifid Nebula, also known as M20, is a cosmic study in contrasts. It lies about 5,000 light-years away in the nebula-rich constellation Sagittarius. This star-forming region illustrates three different types of astronomical nebulae: red emission nebulae from hydrogen atoms, blue reflection nebulae from dust reflecting starlight, and dark nebulae where dense dust clouds appear in silhouette. The red emission region is particularly striking.
