Neptune, the farthest planet from the Sun, appears dark and ghostly in this James Webb Space Telescope near-infrared image. This is because methane in its atmosphere absorbs infrared light. However, high-altitude clouds rise above the methane layer and are visible as bright streaks. You can also see the planet's faint rings, made of ice and dust.
