Rigel, a brilliant blue supergiant, marks the foot of Orion the Hunter, about 860 light-years from Earth. This deep image shows Rigel at its center. Its blue color indicates it is much hotter than our Sun, and it is massive enough to end its life as a core-collapse supernova.
