NASA APOD · Emmanuel Astronomono
COSMIC MESSAGE
Messier 24 is not a star cluster or nebula, but a window into the distant Sagittarius spiral arm of our Milky Way galaxy. It is a gap in nearby, obscuring interstellar dust clouds. Looking through this window, which is over 300 light-years wide, you see stars some 10,000 light-years or more from Earth. It's sometimes called the Small Sagittarius Star Cloud.
