A Map of the Observable Universe

NASA APOD · B. Ménard & N. Shtarkman; Data: SDSS, Planck, JHU, Sloan, NASA, ESA
COSMIC MESSAGE

This map shows a wedge of the observable universe, encompassing about 200,000 galaxies and quasars. It was created by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey between 2000 and 2020. The map helps us understand the largest scales humanity can observe. Looking out to the edge of the observable universe, we see galaxies and then quasars, which are the bright centers of distant galaxies.
