The Whirlpool Galaxy, M51, is one of the original spiral nebulae. Its arms are described by a logarithmic spiral, a mathematical curve where the separation grows geometrically with distance from the center. This image from the Hubble Space Telescope has been digitally transformed to unroll those arms. M51 is sixty thousand light years across.
