Animation: Black Hole Destroys Star

When a star gets too close to a black hole, the black hole's gravity stretches the star. The difference in gravitational pull from one side of the star to the other tears it apart. This animation shows a star approaching a black hole, its outer layers stripped away during its closest pass. Much of the star's atmosphere is then flung into space.
