Cometary Globules

These unusual, bright-rimmed, flowing shapes are called cometary globules. They are made of interstellar gas and dust, and each one is about a light-year across. Located about 1,300 light-years away toward Puppis and Vela, these globules have been sculpted by the intense ultraviolet light from nearby hot stars. They also stream away from the Vela supernova remnant, which might be their origin.
