Prominences and Filaments on the Active Sun
NASA APOD · solar cycle 25
COSMIC MESSAGE
This image, taken on May 15, shows the Sun's chromosphere, capturing emission from hydrogen atoms. Approaching solar cycle 25's maximum, active regions and twisting solar filaments sprawl across the Sun's surface. These filaments, suspended in strong magnetic fields, appear as bright prominences when viewed beyond the Sun's edge.
