Christmas Tree Aurora
In December, the sky over Djúpivogur, Iceland, lit up like a Christmas tree. Shimmering green, blue, and purple auroral colors formed a tree-like apparition, caused by high atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen reacting to a burst of incoming electrons. These collisions cause atoms and molecules to emit visible light as their electrons return to their normal states.
