The Perseverance rover's SuperCam instrument zapped a Martian rock named Ma'az 30 times. Its microphone recorded the soft popping sounds of the laser shots. These sounds are shockwaves created as bits of rock vaporize in the thin Martian atmosphere. This was the first acoustic recording of laser shots on Mars.
