Leaving Earth
The MESSENGER spacecraft recorded its departure from Earth in 2005 on its way to Mercury. This time-lapse video shows Earth rotating as it recedes into the distance. The sunlit half of Earth is so bright that background stars are not visible. MESSENGER orbited Mercury from 2011 to 2015, mapping its surface.
