M1: The Incredible Expanding Crab
The Crab Nebula, also known as M1, is a supernova remnant, an expanding cloud of gas and dust from a star that exploded in 1054. It is about 10 light-years across and is still expanding at 1,500 kilometers per second. This image shows the intricate filaments of the nebula, which glow in various colors due to different elements.
