Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko Creates Its Tails

Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, observed by ESA's Rosetta spacecraft, shows how comet tails form directly from its nucleus. As the comet neared the Sun, plumes of gas and dust erupted from numerous spots on its surface. These jets, heated by solar radiation, are the source of the comet's two prominent tails. Rosetta's detailed images provided a close-up look at this fundamental cometary process.
