The Sun's light, when passed through a prism-like device, reveals a spectrum of colors. Although our Sun appears white, it emits light of nearly every color, brightest in yellow-green. The dark patches in this spectrum, created at the McMath-Pierce Solar Observatory, show where gas at or above the Sun's surface absorbs sunlight.
