Fifty-three years ago, in December 1972, Apollo 17 astronauts explored the Moon's Taurus-Littrow valley. This photo, taken by Eugene Cernan, shows Harrison Schmitt next to the lunar rover on the rim of Shorty Crater. It was here that Schmitt, a geologist, discovered orange lunar soil, a remarkable find from our last mission to the Moon.
