The Frothy Milky Way

Looking at dust along the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy is like looking into a frothy glass of beer. The dust between stars appears arranged like a foam, with bubbles and voids. This structure is churned by shocks and winds from stars throughout their lives. This infrared image, based on IRAS satellite data, maps radiation from galactic dust cloud edges, revealing their complex distribution.
