USNO-A2.0 Catalog: A Digital Sky

This map shows over 526 million of the brightest stars, compiled by the US Naval Observatory's Precision Measuring Machine. The machine digitized photographic plates to create this detailed view of the entire sky. Yellow areas mark regions with 150,000 stars per square degree, while dark blue areas have only 500 stars per square degree. The most prominent feature is the central disk of our own Milky Way galaxy.
