Summer at the South Pole

This image, taken by the Galileo spacecraft in December 1990, shows Earth's Southern Hemisphere near the beginning of summer. The mosaic was constructed from images taken over a 24-hour period, making the entire hemisphere appear to be in sunlight. South America is visible on the middle left, and Antarctica is dramatically centered on the South Pole.
