A Year of Resolving Backgrounds

The sky glows in every wavelength, but the sources of these background radiations have long been puzzles. In X-ray light, the Chandra and XMM spacecraft resolved much of the uniform X-ray background. They found it to be many discrete sources, often black holes at galactic centers accreting matter.
