Spicules: Jets on the Sun

Spicules are jets on the Sun, like pipes as wide as a state and half the Earth's length. They are filled with hot gas moving at 50,000 kilometers per hour, contained by transparent magnetic fields. This image shows a high-resolution view of these solar flux tubes in active region 10380.
