NGC 2266 is a star cluster listed in the New General Catalog, which was published in 1888 by J. L. E. Dreyer. This catalog consolidated astronomical discoveries by astronomers like William, Caroline, and John Herschel. Dreyer's work remains important today, lending its "NGC" designation to countless clusters, galaxies, and nebulae. This particular cluster is an older one, its stars having had time to evolve.
