Melas, Candor, and Ophir: Valleys of Mariner

Valles Marineris, Mars's grand canyon, is a vast system of depressions stretching 4,000 kilometers along the Martian equator. This spectacular perspective view, first imaged by the Mariner 9 spacecraft, looks north over the canyon's central regions. Dark Melas Chasma lies in the foreground, with Candor Chasma and the steep walls of Ophir Chasma near the horizon.
