Ceres: Asteroid or Planet?

Ceres, a thousand kilometers across, is the largest object in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. For a time in 2006, astronomers debated reclassifying it as a planet, not an asteroid. The decision hinged on its size and whether it had cleared its orbit of other debris. Today, Ceres is considered a dwarf planet, a category that includes Pluto.
