W5: Pillars of Star Formation

NASA APOD · Lori Allen, Xavier Koenig (Harvard-Smithsonian CfA) et al., JPL-Caltech, NASA
MENSAJE CÓSMICO

The Spitzer Space Telescope studied star-forming region W5, providing clues about how stars form. Massive stars near the center of empty cavities appear older than stars at the edges. This suggests that older stars in the center trigger the formation of younger stars at the edges. This triggered formation happens when hot, outflowing gas compresses cooler gas into dense knots that then contract into new stars.
