Planetary Nebula Mz3: The Ant Nebula

The Ant Nebula, Mz3, is a planetary nebula with a distinctive, non-spherical shape, despite being formed by a round star similar to our Sun. The gas streams away from the central star at speeds of 1,000 kilometers per second, creating its elongated, ant-like appearance. This unusual shape may be due to a hidden companion star or the magnetic field of the central star. The nebula stretches for about a light-year.
