Quasars are extremely luminous galactic nuclei, powered by supermassive black holes. Some of these, called gamma-ray quasars, emit radiation with more than 10,000 times the energy of visible light. Instruments like EGRET on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory detected these distant, powerful objects.
