M16: Stars Upon Pillars

The Hubble Space Telescope captured these pillars of molecular hydrogen and dust in the Eagle Nebula, M16. These structures, sometimes called "elephant trunks," are light years long. Inside them, dense regions known as evaporating gaseous globules, or EGGs, are gravitationally collapsing to form new stars. Intense radiation from nearby young stars erodes the pillars, revealing the EGGs within.
