COSMIC MESSAGE
What are the shape and composition of our Milky Way Galaxy? This question is hard to answer due to obscuring dust. In the 1940s, astronomer Walter Baade identified a 'window' near the galactic center with little opaque dust. Now called 'Baade's Window,' this region contains millions of stars. It is used for studies of the distant Milky Way, including monitoring stars for gravitational lensing events.
