The Closest Galaxy: The Sagittarius Dwarf

NASA APOD · A. Oksanen, 2.5 meter Nordic Optical Telescope
COSMIC MESSAGE

For years, astronomers thought the Large Magellanic Cloud was our closest galaxy. But this dim, fuzzy patch, the Sagittarius Dwarf, is even closer. It went unnoticed until its discovery in 1994. The Sagittarius Dwarf is so dim and spread out that it's difficult to observe, even though it's near our Milky Way.
