The Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico is the largest single-dish telescope in the world, opening in 1963. This 305-meter dish sits in a natural valley and has been used for many astronomical projects, including studies of pulsars and mapping gas in the Galaxy. Arecibo can also send and receive radio waves, bouncing them off planets in our solar system.
