COSMIC MESSAGE
The colors of Comet Hyakutake result from sunlight interacting with the dust and gas released by its warming nucleus. Microscopic dust particles reflect sunlight, while the Sun's ultraviolet radiation excites and ionizes gas molecules, causing them to glow. This enhanced color picture, taken on March 18-19, shows subtle color changes across the coma and a faint, multicolored tail.
