In December 1990, the Space Shuttle Columbia carried an array of astronomical telescopes into orbit. Known as Astro-1, these instruments observed the universe at ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths. Seen here in Columbia's payload bay against the constellation Orion, the telescopes included UIT, HUT, WUPPE, and BBXRT.
