From space, the POLAR spacecraft captured this view of an auroral oval crowning Earth's North Pole. These false-color images show an auroral substorm, caused by charged particles from the Sun spiraling along magnetic field lines into Earth's atmosphere. The aurora glow on both the day and night sides of the planet.
