During Apollo 16's three-day mission in April 1972, astronauts explored the lunar highlands. John W. Young photographed Charles M. Duke, Jr. collecting rock samples at the Descartes landing site, near Plum Crater. The Lunar Roving Vehicle is parked in the background. Apollo 16 was also notable for deploying the first lunar observatory.
