COSMIC MESSAGE
The Apollo 16 crew deployed the first and only lunar astronomical observatory in 1972. This Far Ultraviolet Camera/Spectrograph, a 3-inch telescope, photographed Earth, nebulae, star clusters, and the Large Magellanic Cloud. Placed in the shadow of the Lunar Module to prevent overheating, it captured ultraviolet light that Earth's atmosphere normally blocks.
