Nebulosity in Sagittarius

NASA APOD · Anglo-Australian Telescope Board
COSMIC MESSAGE

The colors in this nebulosity in Sagittarius, cataloged as NGC 6589 and NGC 6590, are caused by gas and dust. The blue color near the bright stars is due to reflection off interstellar dust. This dust emits little visible light on its own, appearing dark and blocking background stars without a nearby light source. The red color farther from the bright stars comes from glowing hydrogen gas.
