COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet Hale-Bopp was discovered in 1995 and was eagerly watched for signs of brightening. This image, taken on May 14, 1996, at the European Southern Observatory, shows the comet about 340 million miles from Earth. Astronomers were tracking its progress, hoping it would put on a spectacular display, similar to Comet Hyakutake earlier that year. The comet was on schedule for a bright appearance in 1997.
