Our Milky Way Galaxy's plane is lined with diffuse gas clouds containing radioactive aluminum atoms, Al26. The COMPTEL instrument on NASA's Compton Gamma Ray Observatory can detect the 1.8 million electron Volt gamma rays emitted by this radioactive decay. This image is COMPTEL's first full-sky survey in these gamma rays, showing the galactic plane horizontally.
