Astronomers used the Hubble Space Telescope to image a distant patch of sky, revealing many merging groups of stars and gas. These have been called 'pre-galactic blobs.' The image shows a dense cluster of these small, blue, merging objects, which may be a snapshot of galaxies in the process of formation.
