The Largest Impact Crater

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The largest known impact crater in our solar system is the South Pole-Aitken Basin, on the far side of Earth's Moon. Over 1,300 miles across, it was formed when an asteroid or comet struck the surface, penetrating the lunar mantle. This false-color mosaic from the Clementine mission shows the basin. Terrestrial planets and moons are often scarred from frequent bombardment by large objects early in the solar system's history.
