Dark Bok Globules in IC 2944

NASA APOD · David Malin, Anglo Australian Observartory
COSMIC MESSAGE

The dark spots in this picture are not photographic defects, but an unusual type of interstellar cloud known as a Bok globule. Named after astronomer Bart Bok, these small, dark clouds of gas and dust are typically condensing to form new stars. These particular Bok globules are seen in front of a glowing H II region called IC 2944.
