COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet Hale-Bopp was an exceptionally bright comet, possibly the brightest since the Great Comet of 1811. It appeared high above Las Palmas in the Spanish Canary Islands in this 1997 photograph. Though bright, its distance across the inner Solar System meant it did not appear as large as Comet West in 1975. The comet was still weeks away from its peak brightness when this image was captured.
