The Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) on the Space Shuttle Endeavour captured this view of the giant spiral galaxy Messier 101. The colors, from purple to white, show increasing ultraviolet light intensity. This light comes mainly from clouds of gas containing newly formed stars, many times more massive than the sun.
