Robert Goddard, one of the founders of modern rocketry, launched the world's first liquid-fueled rocket in 1926. He dreamed of spaceflight after reading H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds" as a teenager. Though ridiculed for suggesting rockets could reach the Moon, his experiments, supported by the Smithsonian, laid the groundwork for future space exploration.
