A Universe in a Box

This image is a computer simulation of the universe, billions of years ago. It shows how gas might have been distributed when the universe was only a quarter of its current age. Supercomputers at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications ran this model, based on assumptions about the universe's early composition. This hypothetical 'universe in a box' is about eight million light years across on each side.
