IP Pegasi: Spiral Star

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Spiral arms are not just for galaxies. This image shows a hot disk of gas, smaller than the Sun, spiraling around a white dwarf star in the IP Pegasi system. The gas forms an accretion disk, siphoned from a companion star and pulled in by the white dwarf's gravity. While we cannot image the spirals directly, their pattern is imprinted in the disk's behavior.
