The Snake Nebula in Ophiuchus

NASA APOD · B. Wallis and R. Provin
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Snake Nebula, a series of dark absorption clouds in Ophiuchus, is made of interstellar dust. These dust grains, mostly carbon, absorb visible starlight and re-emit it in the infrared. This absorption blocks light from background stars, creating the appearance of starless voids in the sky.
